What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a unique healing discipline that concerns itself with the bodies’ own inborn, or innate, ability to heal itself. The body is built with the ability to communicate, run, and heal on its own through the pathways of the nervous system.

This system of intelligence controls the beating of your heart; the digestion of your food; the activity of your cells; the healing of wounds; the movement of muscles; and the everyday functions of a living body. The brain sends messages through your spinal cord and over the nerves to communicate with each area of your body.

When your spinal bones (vertebrae) misalign, they can impinge upon the nerves that exit through each of these vertebrae. The compression of these nerves can cause irritation thus causing a disruption in the messages being sent through that nerve pathway.

Chiropractic uses the art of adjusting the spine into alignment to remove the compression to the nerves exiting the spine. When compression is removed the nerve function is restored and the body can then heal itself through proper communication.

Chiropractic’s success with a variety of health conditions is the result of its focus on the relationship between the nervous system and the spinal column.

How Does Chiropractic Work?

Chiropractic works by restoring your bodies natural ability to heal itself.

Your body communicates along the pathways of the nervous system. This path connects your brain to the rest of your body through an intricate pathway of nerves and your spinal cord. If these nerve tissues are impinged or compressed by your spinal bones then the right messages are unable to be sent. It is similar to squeezing a hose and not as much water is coming out.

When we realign your spine and remove the interference to your compressed nerves, your body is able to communicate more efficiently and is thus able to heal itself, naturally. Chiropractic locates the cause of your ailment rather than just masking the symptoms with medication.

For example: How does Chiropractic help remove your back and leg pain? A reason you may have back and leg pain is because your low back vertebrae move out of alignment and pinch the nerves exiting the bones at these levels

A chiropractor puts the bones back into alignment and removes the pressure on that nerve. Over a series of visits, your body will restore to its normal function, your muscles will relax, and your back and leg pain will recede. This is because the nerves can communicate again with the brain and they aren’t screaming that something is obviously wrong.

Chiropractic goes well beyond just treating your neck and back pain. The same nerves that were affecting your low back can now communicate to the rest of the tissues and organs they supply…such as your bladder, reproductive organs, muscles, kidneys, etc. Your body will be able to heal and function to its fullest capabilities by the removal of nerve interference.

What Is an Adjustment?

An adjustment is the term used for “putting your bones back in place.” A Chiropractor adjusts your spine back into alignment.

Through a series of tests, range of motion, and palpation (movement) of your spine, a Chiropractor finds which area of your spine is the cause of your specific ailments. When we have found the misaligned vertebrae we will adjust the bones back into place. This realignment of your spine is called a Chiropractic adjustment.

Note: Chiropractors can also realign the joints of your shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.

What is a Subluxation?

When the bones in your spine misalign, they can impinge the nerves that exit in between these bones. This is called a Vertebral Subluxation. Vertebral meaning the vertebrae or bones in your spine. Subluxation meaning “less than a dislocation.” The bone has subluxated or moved out of alignment and has in turn impinged the nerve exiting that area of the spine.

A subluxation inhibits the communication of impulses between the brain, nervous system, and the rest of the body. Chiropractic states that without correction of these vertebral subluxations, the nervous system is unable to work properly and therefore a person cannot perform at his or her optimum.

Should I See a Chiropractor After a Car Accident?

YES! Car accidents cause whiplash, spinal misalignment, spraining of ligaments, and straining of associated muscles. These conditions may also lead to associated health conditions if left untreated. Conditions such as chronic migraines, dizziness, ringing in your ears, imbalance, blurry vision, numbness in face, shoulders, arms or hands, muscle weakness, increased blood pressure, vomiting, and nervousness, to name a few.

When you are involved in an auto accident your neck and back are “thrown around” during the collision. This causes bones in these areas of your spine to misalign. It also causes muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues to tear and become inflamed. Many people experience achiness, stiffness, headaches, decreased motion, sharp pains, numbness, tingling, dizziness, and overall discomfort following car accidents.

Whether it was a “fender-bender” or a head-on collision, you should be checked for misalignment in your spine. This will ensure that your spine is aligned and your nerves are able to function without impingement. If your spine stays misaligned, degeneration of the involved bones takes place due to friction rubbing of the vertebrae. Your nerves will stay compressed, your bones can degenerate over time, and you experience ill health due to nerve compression.

Just because you did not fracture any bones, or need stitches, does not mean that you are “OK.” Don’t wait for the symptoms to go away-call Spring Mountain Chiropractic today to check for possible misalignment and nerve impingement.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

YES! There are many misconceptions about the safety of adjusting the spine back into alignment. Due to years of mis-information and/or lack of education on Chiropractic, the public has formulated many myths about the safety of Chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care is safer than many forms of health care in the United States and abroad. An estimated 40 million Chiropractic adjustments will be given this year with approximately 4-6 adjustments causing detrimental effects to the patient. The medical profession alone will claim approximately 4,000 lives this year from reactions to prescription drugs!

At Spring Mountain Chiropractic, extreme diagnostic care is taken to heed any warning signs that would indicate underlying health conditions that may complicate the care you receive. Further diagnostic tests and alternate techniques are used for patients with histories of osteoporosis, arteriosclerosis, stroke, and degenerative arthritis and/or disc disease.

Years of training and thousands of Chiropractic adjustments make Chiropractic care safe and effective for all ages. If you have any questions or concerns about the safety of Chiropractic care for you, or a friend, then feel free to email us.

How Long Will I Have To Go To the Chiropractor?

Many of you have heard the statement “When you start going to a Chiropractor you have to go forever.” There are a couple of reasons for this statement.

The Chiropractic philosophy focuses upon the fact that your body is controlled by your nervous system-your brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Your spinal bones surround these nerves that exit the spinal cord. When the bones move out of place, they can impinge these nerves. When the nerves are impinged, they can’t send messages from the body to the brain or vice versa. Your body is unable to communicate therefore it is unable to heal as it has the potential to heal itself.

Many chiropractors will tell their patients that they should seek Chiropractic care for the rest of their lives in order for your body to always be at its optimal healing potential. By having your spine aligned once a month, every three months, or even twice a year, your nervous system will be free of interference and will be able to direct the body in its processes much more efficiently.

It is similar to going to the dentist twice a year - this prevents tooth decay and many related diseases. Regular chiropractic care helps prevent many spinal problems and related ailments throughout your life.

How long will YOU have to come for your specific ailment if you choose not to seek regular Chiropractic care? This depends upon your condition and your body’s ability to heal itself after we have realigned your spine.

Every condition and person is unique and the ability to heal is different in each individual. Factors involved are: How long you have had this condition; the mechanism of injury; the extent of damage to your spine, muscles, and soft tissues; the condition of your spine prior to the accident; your current health status, age, activity level, and attitude.

Our goal is to get you well, not keep you here as long as we can!

Can Chiropractic Treat Slipped Discs?

Chiropractic is one of the best means of treating disc problems conservatively. The success rate is high for discs that are protruded, or bulging. Discs that are prolapsed, or that are a separate segment, are difficult to treat because they are detached from the disc itself.

When your discs degenerate, they have a greater tendency to bulge and compress the nerves exiting your spinal cord. The vertebrae begin to approximate each other as the discs lose their height and this leaves less space for the nerves to exit in between the vertebrae. If a disc bulges or prolepses into the spaces where the nerve exits, then that leaves even less room for the nerves to exit in between the bones.

There are adjusting techniques that focus on distracting (lengthening) and flexing (bending) the spine in order to retract the disc into its normal position and realign the vertebrae that surround the disc. These techniques create a negative pressure in the disc by opening up the spinal joint that surrounds the disc. This negative pressure allows for the disc to reorient itself and thus move off the nerve that is adjacent to it.

The success rate is not 100%. The success rate of surgery is not 100% either. We successfully treat many disc conditions at Spring Mountain Chiropractic proving that conservative Chiropractic care should be considered prior to surgery. If your condition does not improve, we educate you on additional options and help you get a referral to the physician or health care professional we recommend.

If you, or someone you know, is experiencing constant sharp, burning pain in your leg and/or foot then call Spring Mountain Chiropractic for an exam today.

Do I Have a Pinched Nerve?

If you are experiencing symptoms such as numbness, tingling, sharp or stabbing pains, muscle weakness, or decreased sensation then you most likely have a pinched nerve.

A pinched nerve can be caused by a many different conditions. Your spinal bones, or vertebrae, can move out of alignment and in turn pinch the nerves exiting at that spinal level. This is termed “vertebral subluxation.” Your bones move out of alignment and impinge on the nerves in the process.

If your bones and discs degenerate then this leaves less room for the nerves to exit in between them. Degeneration also allows your bones to misalign easier which will increase the chances of nerve impingement.

When your bones and discs degenerate they will grow more bone to stabilize the joint. These are known as bone spurs. Bone spurs are created by your body in response to the friction created between rubbing two bones together. They are also created to “stop the discs from protruding” as they degenerate.

These bone spurs can grow near the area where the nerves exit the spine. If they are in close proximity, they will rub the nerves and cause varying symptoms listed above.

Trauma, accidents, degeneration, daily activities, toxins and stress can cause pinched nerves. Dr. Derek Foreman focuses on the area of spinal misalignment in order to relieve you of your symptoms. Once the spine is in alignment, the compression to the nerve is removed and your pain and/or numbness will go away over time.

Can Chiropractic Help Health Problems Other than Back and Neck Pain?

Your nervous system supplies your entire body with messages on how it needs to function. If the messages become skewed due to impingement from the spine, then cells, tissues, organs, and bodily functions are unable to be carried out properly.

People seek Chiropractic care predominately for headaches and pain. However, everyone could benefit from Chiropractic care! By keeping your spine aligned you can ensure that your body is able to carry out the functions it is instructed to carry out.

If the cause of your health condition is due to nerve impingement, then Chiropractic care could benefit your overall health and well being. If your body is unable to send messages over the nerves to its respective organ or tissue, then your body cannot maintain and heal those tissues efficiently.

Chiropractic focuses on the entire body as one, integrated system. Your nervous system controls these integrated systems. Impingement to your nervous system can therefore cause stages of disease in all areas of your body.

The cause of health conditions is not only traced to nerve impingement, the cause is also due to genetics, diet, habits, environment, and health consciousness. While medications are sometimes needed, Chiropractic focuses upon healing the body, naturally. Health comes from within and your body speaks to you of ill-health through the signs and symptoms you experience.

Chiropractic is a healing philosophy that focuses upon finding the cause of your health conditions rather than treating the symptoms through the use of drugs or surgery. Asthma, ADHD, heartburn, bedwetting, high blood pressure, panic disorders, chest pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, carpal tunnel, irritable bowel syndrome, organ failure, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, colic, menstrual pain, constipation, pregnancy, migraines, stress, TMJ, earaches, dizziness, infertility, and impotence, to name a few, have all been treated and improved through Chiropractic care

The power that made the body, heals the body-all you need is no interference.

Am I Too Old for Chiropractic Care?

You are never too old for Chiropractic care. As you age, your spine begins to degenerate. Many older individuals experience pains associated with the degeneration of their spinal joints, arthritis, or degenerative disc disease. The more degenerated your spine becomes, the more difficult it is to treat.

Many elderly patients find that regular Chiropractic care increases range of motion and reduces arthritic aches and pains. Others find an increase in overall vitality, healing potential, and quality of life.

We use gentle Chiropractic techniques in order to accommodate for aging spines. At Spring Mountain Chiropractic, we take special measures to ensure that we provide gentle and effective treatment for patients with spinal arthritic changes and their associated symptoms.

Help prevent further degeneration by calling the clinic today for a Chiropractic consultation.

What Type of Education Do Chiropractors Receive?

Chiropractors, like other types of doctors, start with undergraduate studies in the basic sciences. After required pre-med undergraduate studies are complete, Chiropractors complete an additional four-year program at one of the 16 Chiropractic colleges in the United States or abroad.

Special emphasis is placed on anatomy, neurology, physiology, pathology, biomechanics, diagnosis, x-ray, spinal and extremity adjusting techniques, and other associated topics. The final year of Chiropractic school is spent interning at the chiropractic college clinics and under the supervision of Chiropractic doctors. By the time Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.) graduate, they will have accomplished approximately 400 semester hours of coursework. This extensive curriculum prepares the doctor to examine, assess, and help correct nervous system dysfunction through the art of spinal realignment.

Before graduating, Chiropractors pass parts I-IV of a National Board Examination. These exams are administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and are considered superior amongst board exams given by other health care fields. Chiropractors must then pass a State board exam to practice in each respective state.

Chiropractic education does not end here. Doctors attend seminars and scientific symposiums to stay abreast the latest research, techniques, and philosophy of Chiropractic health care. These hours range from 12 hours to 18 hours a year of continuing education.

Why Do Kids Need Chiropractic?

The bones of children can misalign just as easily as adults’ bones. The birth process, crawling, learning to walk, sports, trauma, stress, and the growing process can all cause the spine of a child to misalign and impinge upon the nerves that exit the spinal cord. This can cause all kinds of health conditions in children.

“Normal” childhood ailments such as colic, SIDS, constant crying, ear infections, chronic colds, constipation, bedwetting, asthma, ADHD, spitting up food, abnormal sleeping, inadequate feeding, scoliosis, headaches, “growing pains”, sports injuries, hearing problems, heartburn, and turned in feet can all be caused by spinal misalignment.

Chiropractic is safe and effective for children. Children are healthier and more resilient than adults therefore they are able to heal faster. Chiropractic care helps ensure that your child grows up without nervous interference. It allows your child’s body to function and heal the way it was meant to heal.

Why Do I Have Headaches?

Many headaches are caused by the misalignment of your upper neck bones. The first two neck vertebrae are called Atlas and Axis. If these misalign, they can compress the base of the brain stem, the spinal cord, and/or the nerves and blood vessels going to and from the brain. This causes these nerves and/or vessels to throb due to being compressed.

It’s your bodies way of telling you “Hey, something’s wrong here!!” Headaches can also be caused by hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, arterial spasms, allergic conditions, stress/tension, medications, and environmental pollutants.
